Arthouse Drive-In: ‘Son of the White Mare’ (1981)

Robert and T reunite to break down Marcell Jankovics’ animated masterpiece

After months apart, Robert and T are back on the mic to talk about one of Rob’s all-time favorite films, Son of the White Mare, a masterwork from Hungarian director Marcell Jankovics. Based on a Hungarian myth,White Mare follows three demigod brothers, Treeshaker, Stonecrumbler, and Irontemperer, who voyage to the underworld to save the world. The film is now available in the USA for the first time with a 4K restoration from Arbelos Films that also includes János Vitéz (Johnny Corncob) (1973), Sisyphus (1974) and more. They examine the new Blu-Ray and its special features but mainly focus on what makes Son of the White Mare a unique standout in the history of animation.
