Premiere: ‘Sentimental Value’ by Steve Collins

Split Tooth Media presents the online premiere of a new short film by Steve Collins starring Randy E. Aguebor

Steve Collins has a long history of, to use his own word, burrowing. He puts his characters into situations from mundane to deeply strange — one man in his feature I’ve Got Issues (2020) has locked his keys in his car, another is fusing with his recliner — and then uses his tools to dig into the emotions that stem from their predicaments. He pushes into the surreal, but only so that he can more objectively observe back on the real. His interest is in humanity, and humanity, for him, is found in the difficulties of existing.

Sentimental Value sees Collins turning a self-reflexive camera onto the world of art and creation. His characters (primary among them Randy E. Aguebor), still rooted in a drab, mundane world, pine for expression, and suffer when it’s out of their reach.

Collins frequently works with a repertory cast of character actors (all of them brilliant and underused in the industry), and Sentimental Value sees several of his regulars giving small, quiet performances flecked with raw moments. Split Tooth is excited to offer the short for viewing here, and follow this link for a career-spanning interview with director Steve Collins.
